ARTWORK FOR THE TWO EMPTY NICHES IN ASHBY COURT, CLARE COLLEGE MEMORIAL COURT IN COLLABORATION WITH WILL HILL.
Text flowing up from the ground and into the Forbes Mellon Library is the principal idea for this artwork. Within a laser cut metal screen abstracted shapes form at ground level and rise up developing first into coherent letter forms and then into text which finally resolves into lines from Lady Elizabeth’s founding statutes. The function of the niche as a usable space will be retained and the curious viewer is drawn inside to see the text finally resolve into the statutes. Lighting would play a key role, transforming the dark niches into lanterns at night. The letterforms are based upon the types developed by the eminent Venetian printer Nicholas Jenson (1420 – 1480) Jenson is considered one of the finest of the early roman types. Many fonts in current usage have their origin in this alphabet. There is an opportunity to have one screen with an English version of the Statutes and in the other niche a screen with text in the original Latin. Will Hill the course leader of the MA in Graphic Design and Typography an expert in typography and letter design has conceived many creative ways to develop my ideas and has made this artwork a genuine collaboration.
